This Sunday, I visited LaGuardia Landing Lights Park in Queens, NY. It's a place that I've been wanting to visit for a while. For those who don't know, this park is made up of a collection of smaller parks separated by roads. Each of these small parks is dotted with landing lights in a line, helping planes land at LaGuardia Airport. Sometimes, if wind conditions are right, planes looking to land at LaGuardia use this path to land which results in the planes flying super low over the parks.
I've photographed the Jones Beach Airshow for years at this point, and it's one of my favorite events to document. When I photograph the aircraft there, they are flying way out over the ocean and I have to use a long lens to capture them. At Landing Lights Park, it's the exact opposite. I don't think I've ever been this close to an airplane in flight, except when I'm a passenger. They were incredibly close to the ground and loud. It was awesome.
I didn't really need my long lens for these planes as they were flying super low and directly overhead, but I still used it. I was almost able to capture the pilots and passengers inside! This was a great experience as I love photographing planes and the Jones Beach Airshow only happens on Memorial Day. I should have those pictures edited and uploaded soon, as well as the pictures I took of a pretty sunset over Long Beach on Sunday night.
